Robust Electrical Tester for Rail Bonds – Railway Instrument for OHE Structure Testing
Widely used in the rail track maintenance industry, this railway electrical tester is a reliable tool for analysing the integrity and safety of the OHE (Overhead Equipment) structure of rail bonds. It is often used as part of an ongoing railway track maintenance programme to check the safety and integrity of the rail system, as rail bonds often appear physically sound but upon testing can reveal an open circuit or underlying issue which needs to be repaired to full working order. Railways undergo much stress, strain and harsh weather, so a regular railway maintenance programme including rail bond testing, is essential for the ongoing safety of the track.
The railway electrical test instrument is robust, easy-to-use and gives reliable results. Its hard-wearing design is able to withstand regular track usage and the innovative construction of the tester saves on battery life by only displaying results during testing. It includes a magnet probe with a 10m flexible cable which is double insulated and 2.5 mmsq thick. All of the parts come in a durable carry case for safe storage and transportation.
How to Use the Rail Bond Tester
Always carry out a preliminary check of your railway electrical instrument before and after use. To do this, apply an electrical short circuit between the probe and a small metal bar suitable for testing. Make sure the magnet and lead assembly are not fitted at this time. Press the button and wait for the device to show a ‘Fail’ and then a ‘Pass’. Keep the button pressed and remove the metal bar. The electrical tester should then display a ‘Fail’.
Once the preliminary check is complete, connect the lead and magnet to the instrument to be tested, press the button (with the magnet clear of the impact probe), and wait for it to display ‘Fail’. Bring the magnet into contact with the impact probe and hold down the button to wait for a ‘Pass’. If this sequence of events happens it indicates there is no serious malfunction. However, if the item being tested doesn’t operate in this way, it will need an instrument calibration service.
